Robert J. Mello

Robert J. Mello, 87, of Somerset, formerly of Fall River, died Thursday, August 24, 2023, at Somerset Ridge Center, surrounded by his family.

He was the husband of the late Louise (Bercier) Mello, to whom he was married for 58 years.

Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Emily Mello and the late Antone C. Mello. He resided in Fall River, for most of his life, before moving to Somerset in the late nineties.

For many years, he worked in Real Estate and also in Furniture Sales, in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He served with the 747 Artillery Group and later with the 211th Field Artillery of the Army National Guard for 9 years, while earning the rank of Master Sergeant. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed ten pin bowling and pocket billiards. He was also a member of the former Fall River Bowling Green Club for over twenty years holding the positions of Financial Secretary, Vice President, and President. He was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church in Somerset. While he was living in Fall River, he was a Eucharistic Minister with his wife for many years at St. Anne’s Church.

Robert leaves four children: Vanessa Temple, of Nevada, Kenneth Mello, of Swansea, Patricia Costa, of Fall River, and Janice Camara, of Westport; 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Roger Mello.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 8:45 AM from the Oliveira Funeral Home - South Main St. Chapel, 2064 South Main St., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, Somerset. Entombment and Committal Prayers will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum. Calling hours will be held Monday night from 5 - 7 PM.
