Mary (Moniz) Castro, 87, of Swansea, MA, died Thursday at Charlton Memorial Hospital.
Born in Fall River, MA, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Sardinha) Moniz; she lived in Fall River for most of her life before moving to Swansea 35 years ago.
Mary worked for many years as a presser in the local garment industry, retiring in 1976. She was a retired member of U.N.I.T.E.
Mary was an active communicant of St. Dominic Church where she served as a Eucharistic minister. She was a member and past president of its Women's Guild, a member of the St. Vincent De Paul Committee, a CCD teacher for many years and served on the Parish Council. She was a recipient of the Marion Medal in 1995. She was a volunteer at St. Anne's Hospital for many years as a Patient Representative and also volunteered at Country Garden Nursing Home for many years.
She is survived by three daughters, Carol Souza (Husband James) of Morgan Hill, CA; Beverly Farias (Husband Philip) of Tiverton; RI and Kim Pearson (Husband Frederick) of Tiverton, RI; a brother, Edward Moniz of Fall River; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Joseph and John Moniz.
Her funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. from the Oliveira Funeral Home, 2064 South Main St., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. in St. Dominic Church, Swansea. Interment in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours Tuesday 5 - 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Michael Church Soup Kitchen 189 Essex Street Fall River, MA 02720.
