Maria L. (Rego) Melo, 99, of Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation-Crawford Nursing Center, 273 Oak Grove Ave., formerly of East Main St., died Tuesday at the center. She was the wife of the late Antonio V. Melo.
Born in Furnas, St. Michael, Azores, she was a daughter of the late Manuel and Leonora (Moniz) Rego; she emigrated to this country in 19 67 and became a U.S. citizen in 1985 at the age of 82. She was an amazing mother and grandmother. She was a member of Good Shepherd Parish. Mrs. Melo worked as a machine operator for several years at the former Carousl Mfg.
She is survived by three daughters, Genoveva Costa of Florida, Maria Fernanda Costa (Husband Armando) of Florida and Ivone M. Lagoa (Husband Jacinto) of Putnam, CT; two sons, Jose R. Vieira (Wife Fatima) of Fall River and Manuel Vieira (Wife Guilhermina) of Somerset, MA; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Americo Vieira and mother-in-law of the late Antonio Costa. She was pre-deceased by two brothers and five sisters.
Her funeral will be held Saturday at 8 a.m. from the OLIVEIRA FUNERAL HOME, 2064 South Main St., followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in Good Shepherd Parish. Interment in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours Friday 5 - 9 p.m.
