Jose S. Alves, 85, of Second Street, passed away Tuesday at Country Gardens in Swansea. He was the husband of the late Dorinda (Vitoria) Alves.
Born in Ribeira Seca, St. Michael, Azores; a son of the late Antonio Alves and Elvira (Silva) Arruda, he resided in Fall River for the past 42 years.
Mr. Alves had worked as a lead man for Pearson Yachts in Portsmouth. He later had worked at Bradley Scott as a custodian.
He was a member of Santo Christo Church and served as a collector at the parish. He was involved with community work at St. Anne's Church. He enjoyed gardening and took great pride showcasing his botanical garden.
The Alves family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Country Gardens on the Alzheimer's Unit for the care they provided to Jose.
He is survived by a daughter, Irene M. DaPonte (Husband Jose) of Fall River; a son, Paul Alves (Wife Ida) of Fall River; 2 sisters, Gloria Alves of St. Michael, Azores and Conceicao Sousa of Canada; 4 brothers, Antonio Arruda of Canada, Dinis Arruda of St. Michael, Azores, Joao Arruda and Hermano Arruda both of Canada; 4 grandchildren, Helen Soares, Monica DaPonte, Jose DaPonte and Tanya Alves; 4 great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Fernando Arruda, Manuel Arruda and Gilda Melo.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 8 a.m. from the OLIVEIRA FUNERAL HOME, 215 Columbia St., followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in Santo Christo Church. Interment in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours Monday 5 - 8 p.m. Donations in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association Massachusetts Chapter 311 Arsenal Street Watertown, MA 02472.
