John M. Mendonca

John M. Mendonca, 86, of Berkley, MA, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2012. He was the devoted husband of Patricia A. (Cabral) Mendonca.

Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late John M. Mendonca, Sr. and Mary (Torres) Mendonca. A navy veteran of WWII, he served as a radioman aboard the U.S.S. Tarawa. He served in Korea in the United States Army and later retired from the Army National Guards as Platoon Sergeant.

He was a member of the Fall River Police Department with 30 years of service as a Detective and Police Officer, retiring in 1981. A firearms marksman, he also excelled in finger printing and photography. He was a member of the Fall River Police Relief Association, Massachusetts Police Association, Fall River Retired Municipal Employees Associa, Life Member of VFW Post 486 and former member of Amvets Post 60.

John loved fishing, lobstering, gardening, carpentry and long walks in the country with his many dogs, especially his German Shepherds Sparky and Tammi. He enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and was an avid reader.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his three daughters, Cynthia Silvia Boudakian and her husband Brad of Westport, Beverly Ash and her husband William of Rehoboth and Linda Mendonca of CT; two grandsons, Jon Silvia of Fall River and William Ash of Rehoboth; two great-grandchildren, Matalin Silvia and Nolin Silvia; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of Dolores Lancia of Fall River and also the late George M. Mendonca.

John also left a very caring and devoted sister-in-law, Cindi A. Feeley who was always there during difficult times.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 7th at 8:45 a.m. from the Oliveira Funeral Home, 2064 South Main St., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church, 32 South Main St., Assonet, MA. Interment in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours Monday 5 - 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a charity of your choice.
