John DaPonte, Jr., 82, of Fall River, died Monday at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Alfrena (Souza) DaPonte.
Born in Fall River, MA, he was a son of the late John and Serafina (Veloza) DaPonte, he lived most of his life in Fall River. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during WW II.
Mr. DaPonte was president of the Santo Christo Federal Credit Union board of directors. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Fr. J. Boehr Council and a recipient of the Fr. J. Boehr Award. He was a member of the I.L.G.W.U. and IAM Local 587.
Mr. DaPonte worked as an assembler at Raytheon in Portsmouth, retiring in 1991. He previously worked at the former Floral Fashion of Tiverton for 36 years. He worked part-time for Boyko Memorial Funeral Home and Oliveira Funeral Homes for many years.
He is survived by two sons, John D. DaPonte of Cranston, RI and David P. DaPonte (Wife Ileen) of Portland, ME; a granddaughter, Emma C. DaPonte. He was the brother of the late Mary M. Todd.
His funeral will be held Saturday at 8:45 a.m. from the Oliveira Funeral Home, 215 Columbia St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:45 a.m. in Santo Christo Church. Interment and committal prayers in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Calling hours Friday 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, Centralized Memorial Processing Center 30 Speen Street Framingham, MA 01701.
