James R. "Jim" Waters passed away peacefully on June 9th at his home in Tiverton. He shared his life with his wife Nan. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on July 29th. Jim served in the US Navy during World War II having traveled to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Philippines receiving several medals of Honor. He taught Driver's Education in the Portsmouth and Tiverton schools and finished his career as a long haul truck driver for several companies. He and Nan retired in 1985 to spend the winters in Seminole, Florida.
Jim was an avid western movie fan, his favorite actor being John Wayne. He enjoyed camping in his younger years and traveling with friends. He loved to play cards and listen to patriotic music and read the newspapers daily. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Portsmouth and the Disabled Veterans of War.
Besides his wife, Jim leaves his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ron Ferreira of Colorado, their children, Ron Jr. of Newport and Lisa Allen and her husband, Ben. His daughter and son-in-law, with whom he lived, Nadine and David Santos of Tiverton and their children , Marisa Santos and Chris Kane of Middletown, Jenni and Dan McNamee and Jacob Santos of Tiverton. Jim also had 4 great-grandchildren, Marley, Khelin, Rose Ellen and Emma. They were the light of his life. Jim was also the father of the late Tom Waters of Florida. He also leaves 2 brothers, John Waters and his wife Laurie and Joe Waters of Florida.
A Memorial is planned for Saturday, June 22 at the OLIVEIRA FUNERAL HOME, 2064 South Main St. in Fall River from 10 a.m. - 12 noon, with a Service at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Jim's honor be sent to the Veteran's Transition House, 20 Willis St., New Bedford, MA 02740.
