James C. Mello, 91, of Grant St., Fall River, died Thursday at Sarah Brayton Nursing Care Center. He was the husband of the late Diamantina "Diana" (Santos) Mello.
Born in Fall River, MA, he was a son of the late John Mello Cordeiro and Sarah (Botelho) Mello Cordeiro; he was a lifelong resident of this city and was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.
He retired from the Newport Naval Base in 1983. He previously worked as a compounder for 35 years at the former Firestone Rubber & Latex Co. He held multiple positions with the United Rubber Workers, including past president.
Mr. Mello was a member of Montaup Country Club and a member of the board of directors of Santo Christo Federal Credit Union for many years. He was a communicant of the Santo Christo Church.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan Winarski (Husband Steven) of Fall River; two sons, Michael J. Mello (Wife Judy) of Somerset and Kenneth Mello (Wife Margaret) of Westport; a sister, Lorraine Wiegand of Rochester, NY; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the sister of the late Mary "Mae" Carreiro.
His funeral will be held Tuesday at 8 a.m. from the Oliveira Funeral Home, 215 Columbia St., followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in Santo Christo Church. Interment in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours Monday 4 - 8 p.m. Flowers welcome or memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
