Irene (Tavares) Martin

FALL RIVER… Irene (Tavares) Martin, 100 of Fall River passed away March 7, 2020 at the Sarah S. Brayton Nursing Care Center.

She was the loving wife of the late Lt. John J. Martin, of the FRFD, to whom she had been married for 61 years, before his passing in 2002.

Born in Fall River, she was a daughter of the late Cristiano and Maria (Carvalho) Tavares and had been a lifelong resident of this city.

Mrs. Martin had worked for many years as a Seamstress in the local Textile Industry before her retirement in 1981. She was a member of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union and had enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling and above all, spending time with her family.

Survivors include her daughter: Janice E. Greaves (husband: Richard) of Somerset; her son: Philip J. Martin (companion: Ana) of Boynton Beach, FL; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, especially her two granddaughters, Jennifer and Julie, who were her caretakers in her final years, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 8 brothers and sisters.

Funeral Mass to which relatives and friends are invited will be held Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 9 AM at Santo Christo Church, Columbia St. Fall River, MA followed by interment at St. Patrick Cemetery, Fall River.
