Gil P. Mello, 81, of Tiverton, RI, died Thursday at his son's home. He was the husband of the late Patricia J. (Botelho) Mello.
Born in Fall River, MA, he was a son of the late Gil and Adeline (Perreira) Mello; he was a resident of Tiverton since 1972; he attended Bristol Community College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. In addition to Korea, he spent many years in the Navy Reserve, spending time in at South Weymouth Air Wing, Quonset Point, Surface Division 1/13L in Newport, RI and the Army Reserve Fort Rodman, New Bedford 483rd Engineer Division. He was honorably discharged in Oct. of 79 after 26 years of military service.
He worked as a baker for 30 years at the Newport Naval Base.
Gil was an avid Red Sox fan. He enjoyed nature and walking his precious little doggie (Lady Ashlee) at the beach, flea markets and yard sales, listening to talk radio (WSAR), going out to eat and a draft beer.
He was a religious man and enjoyed going to mass and volunteering at St. Theresa Church. He had a golden heart, always willing to help others. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by a son, Glenn Mello and daughter-in-law Susan of Fall River; his little dog, Lady Ashlee; three sisters, Germaine Faria of Fall River, Carmela Moniz of Warren, RI and Natalie Yokell of Bristol, CT; three brothers, Roland Mello and Norman Mello, both of Fall River and Thomas Mello of New Bedford; several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. from the OLIVEIRA FUNERAL HOME, 2064 South Main St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Theresa Church, Tiverton. Interment with military honors in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton. Calling hours Monday 5 - 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Southcoast Hospice & VNA, 200 Mill Rd., Fairhaven, MA 02719.
