Exilda M. "Gilda" (Quental) Furtado Boyer, 89, of 41 Donna Drive, Portsmouth, RI, formerly of East Hooper St., Tiverton, RI, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2012 at the home of her daughter Lorraine M. Amado.
She was born in Somerset, MA, on March 15, 1923 to the late Antone and Mary M. (Souza) Quental.
She was the wife of the late Joseph C. Furtado, Sr. and the late George Boyer.
Gilda is survived by her daughters, Lorraine M. Amado (Husband Theodore) Norma C. Cohen both of Portsmouth, Rosemarie Cushman (Husband Jerry) of Virginia Beach, VA and a son, Joseph C. Furtado, Jr. (Wife Pauline) of Kissimmee, FL. She leaves 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She also leaves a sister Alberta Nesbitt of Oregon, a brother Manuel Quental of California and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her son John T. Furtado and her siblings Mary C. Medeiros, Olive Viveiros, Christina Alexander, Jenny LaVaseur, Elsie Ferreira, Joseph Quental, Antone Quental and Charlie Quental.
Gilda was a homemaker and enjoyed being with her family. She was a member of the Tiverton Senior Center and their Knitting Club for 30 years. She enjoyed reading, sewing, puzzles and playing cards with her friends. She loved watching Wheel of Fortune. One of her great joys was crocheting newborn sweater sets and blankets for her grandchildren.
Gilda also fondly known as "Grandma" to her grandchildren and will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
Her funeral will be held on Friday at 9 a.m. from the Oliveira Funeral Home 2064 South Main St. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Ghost Church, Judson St. Tiverton. Interment in Pocasset Hill Cemetery. Calling hours Thursday 4 - 7 p.m.
