Dennis M. Duarte, 73, of Tiverton, RI, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2024, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Dennis W. Duarte and Doris (Arruda) Duarte.
Dennis was a dedicated educator and passionate music enthusiast who was loved by all. A lifelong learner, he graduated from the former Southeastern Massachusetts University with a degree in English. He made a lasting impact as a teacher at Kuss Middle School in Fall River, where he inspired countless students through his chess and computer clubs. He also worked for many years in a group home for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
A friend of Bill W., Dennis was generous with his time and support for those walking the same road. Throughout his life, Dennis touched countless people with his compassion, generosity, and unconditional acceptance.
Dennis had a deep passion for music, which fueled his hobby of collecting records and attending concerts. An avid reader and literature lover, he often shared his passion for books with friends and family, inspiring many, including his sisters and great-nephew Noah. His instrument of choice was the harmonica, which he played whenever he got together with friends for a jam session. From an early age, Dennis enjoyed comic books and superhero movies, attending each new movie with his daughter, Jada. He was a talented writer, and wrote a comic series, Media Starr, which was published in the late 1980s.
Dennis always sought to understand people and their passions. He rarely visited friends and family empty-handed, always giving personal and thoughtful gifts. Dennis loved spending time with his daughter Jada, who shares his passion for music. More than anything, he looked forward to his Friday afternoon chess games with his beloved 9-year-old grandson Jax, who regularly beat him, two out of three games. Jax embodies the quick-witted and brilliant nature of his grandfather. Dennis also cherished his adventures at yard sales and spending time with his dearest friend, Marcia Erickson.
He is survived by his daughter Jada Duarte and her son Jax Pease; his sister Missy Quay and husband Mark Noonan, and their children Tara Quay (children Isabella and Jacob Jabbour), Benjamin Quay and wife Allyson (children Kirsten Quay, Noah Quay, Roman Ridolfi and Carmen Diaz), Alexander Noonan and wife Andrea Wenz, and Rebecca Noonan; sister Doreen Kelly and husband Jack and their children John Kelly and wife Isabelle (children Levi, Samuel and Miriam), Jared Kelly and wife Summer (children Charlie and Cash), and Matthew Kelly and wife Jennifer (daughter Evie); and his former wife and life-long friend Gail (Delisle) Brun; and an extensive network of family and friends.
His funeral will be held Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 10 AM from the Oliveira Funeral Home - South Main St. Chapel, 2064 South Main Street, Fall River. Burial will follow in Pocasset Hill Cemetery.
