MIDDLETOWN - Bella Perry (Furtado) Mello, formerly of Tiverton, died on Tuesday, November 29th at the age of 91 at the Grand Islander Nursing Home, Middletown, R.I. Born in Fall River, she was the wife of the late James David Mello and daughter of the late Joseph Perry Furtado and Maria V. (Silva) Furtado.
She leaves her daughter, Cynthia (Mello) Wesling and son-in-law, Thomas P. Wesling of Tiverton. Bella was the grandmother of Paul J. Wesling and wife, Margaret of Tiverton and David T. Wesling and wife, Bethany of North Billerica, Ma. and the great grandmother of Gianna and Evelyn Wesling and a great granddaughter due in February. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Julietta Furtado, several godchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Joseph and Henry Furtado, Manuel Perry, Alice Aguiar and Mary Osga.
Bella retired after 37 years from Elbe File as a philatelic worker. She was a parishioner of Holy Ghost Church in Tiverton where she was an active member of the Mother's Guild while the grammar school was open. She was a member of the Tiverton Senior Center. Although living in Tiverton for over 65 years, Bella and her siblings were always very proud to talk about their old neighborhood in the "Flint" and attending Espirito Santo School.
She will be remembered for her hospitality and being a care giver to her family, friends and neighbors, whether it was a hot meal, running an errand, a visit to a nursing home or a card and short note to cheer someone. Her heart was always open and her arms were always strong.
Her funeral will be held Monday, December 5th at 9 a.m. from the Oliveira Funeral Home, 2064 South Main St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Ghost Church, Judson St., Tiverton. Committal prayers and interment in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton. Calling hours Sunday 4-8 p.m.
