August Mendonca, 89, formerly of Somerset, died January 12, 2011. He was the husband of Hilda (Manteiga) Mendonca.
Born in Maia, St. Michael, Azores, he was a son of the late Jose M. and Ermelinda (Aguiar) Mendonca. He was a veteran of the U.S.Army, serving during WWII. He was a fan of the New York Giants, Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins.
Mr. Mendonca worked for John Doyle Construction and Thomas Fleming Construction for many years. He was a member of Laborers Local # 610. He later worked for the Town of Somerset.
He was a member of St. John of God Church.
The family of August greatly acknowledges and thanks the entire staff in Ward 7 at the Catholic Memorial Home for the kind, compassionate and loving care they extended to August during his residency there.
The family also wishes to thank Dr. Ronald Schwarts and Dr. Kenath Shamir of Fall River and Dr. Stephen Salloway and staff of the Memory Clinic at Butler Hospital in Providence, RI for the excellent care they provided August as their patient.
Besides his wife of 56 years, he is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Johnson of Somerset; a son, Joseph A. Mendonca of Fall River; a granddaughter, Nicole Johnson; two nieces, Natalie M. Bundon of Wayne, MI and Janice Mohs of NC. He was the brother of the late John Mendonca, Adrian Mendonca and Joseph Mendonca.
Private funeral services were held by the Oliveira Funeral Home, 215 Columbia St. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
