Agnes Benevides

August 15, 1920 — May 24, 2014

Agnes "Iggy" (Mattos) Benevides, 93, of St. Elizabeth Manor, Bristol, RI, formerly of Portsmouth, a homemaker, passed away peacefully on May 24th which would have been her deceased's husband Manuel "Benny" Benevides, Jr. birthday.

Born in Fall River, MA, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Antonia (Rua) Mattos; she lived in Portsmouth since 1969 before moving to Bristol 5 years ago. Mrs. Benevides was the 1st president of the Liberal Club Ladies Auxiliary and a former member of the Portuguese American Civic League. She was full of life, always laughing and smiling.

The family would like to thank the entire staff (our extended family) at St. Elizabeth Manor, especially the Alzheimer's Unit. The care, love and compassion shown to Agnes was a great source of comfort and peace of mind to us. We will be forever grateful for all their support.

She is survived by three daughters, Margaret Benevides of Portsmouth, RI; Elizabeth "Betty" Benevides of Somerset and Nancy Buckley (husband Richard) of Tiverton; a son, Michael Benevides of Portsmouth, RI; a sister, Genevieve Medeiros of Newport; a brother, Peter Mattos of Fall River; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Sophie Goulet, Margaret Medeiros, Antone Mattos, Manuel Mattos, Joseph Mattos, Jr., John Mattos, Arthur Mattos and Mary Silvia and the grandmother of the late Lynne Cummings.

Her funeral will be held Friday at 8 a.m. from the OLIVEIRA FUNERAL HOME, 2064 South Main St., followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in Santo Christo Church. Committal prayers and interment in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours Thursday 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to St. Elizabeth Manor, South Wing, 1 Dawn Hill Rd., Bristol, RI 02809.
